Someone famous once said: "be the change you want to see"
Well, there is no better way to create change than spending our $ more purposely.
When buying a product, caring by whom, how and where — and from what materials — that product is made are the key Infos we shall seak so that each $ we spend create positive change.
We all know about the health benefits of organic food, using organic cleaning products and so on, more and more consumers choose organic cotton clothes but what about organic cotton toys?
What makes organic cotton in toys and baby products, so much better than regular cotton? They are both natural products, right? Right! But they are certainly not created equal!
Just read on and discover the difference and I can assure you next time you buy for your sweet baby you will reach for that organic labeled stuffed animal!
So let's start with the villain: The Conventionally grown cotton
-uses more insecticides and pesticides than ANY other crop on the Planet,
Each year cotton producers use 25% of all words insecticides and 10% of the world's pesticides! That is a hell of an amount of bad chemicals just for one crop don't you think?
These chemicals can be deadly! They poison farmers all over the world and factory workers too during the manufacturing process. The WHO estimates at 20 000 death a year due to pesticide poisoning in developing countries. Here in the US alone, more than 10 000 farmers a year succumb to pesticide-related cancers!
To make matters worse, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has also found that pesticides unintentionally kill at least 67 million birds annually in the U.S alone!
These chemicals seep into run-off water after heavy rains, poisoning lakes, rivers, and waterways. Pesticide residue has been increasingly discovered in foods, farm animals and even breast milk and formula. Not only are these carcinogens responsible for thousands of cases of cancer in adults, but they are particularly harmful to young children.
Hey, some even feel the harmful effects of non-organic cotton: like irritated skin, rashes and even headaches and dizziness can be caused by the chemical residue trapped in the threads.
So why on earth would you give your little one a toy or a blanket he will cuddle, chew on and so and which contains such residues? Eikkk right????
Now let's look at the alternative: The organic cotton
- Organic cotton reduces the environmental footprint.
Basically, it doesn’t damage the soil, has less impact on the air, and uses 71% less water and 62% less energy and of curse, no harmful chemicals or GMOs are used!
- Growing organic cotton promotes safe work and better livelihoods
